Senegal vs Egypt Preview
Senegal (The Lions of Teranga)
19th in FIFA Rankings.
They won Group D at 2-1-0, scoring 7, and allowing just 1.
That came from a 3-0 win over Botswana, 1-1 draw with DR Congo and 3-0 win over Benin.
In the Round of 16 they were big favorites overs Sudan, but had a bit of a scare early when Sudan scored just 6 minutes in. But Gueye scored twice in the first half and Mbaye again in the 77′ and Senegal won 3-1. At 17, Mbaye became the youngest player to ever score at AFCON.
In the quarterfinals they met a formidable Mali team but scored ealry in the 27′, a lead that was made easier to hold after Mali saw red in first-half stoppage time. Senegal went on to win 1-0. They had 9 shots on target to Mali’s just 1.
Senegal has the 3rd-most shot attempts and the most shots on target in the tournament, 43, which is 7 more than the next-closest, Nigeria.
In all matches, Senegal have won 9/11 and 7/9 wins have all come by shut out, and in their last 11 games they’ve outscored opponents by a combined 33-6. They’ve also only lost 1 time in regulation in 41 overall matches (Brazil 2-0 in November) going all the way back to September 2023 which was another friendly. In that time only 4 games ended drawn. It’s been 51 games since their last competitive loss, 1-0 to Uganda in January 2023 in the group stage of the African Nations Championship.
Egypt (The Pharaohs)
34th in FIFA Rankings and AFCON’s winningest team with 7 titles. They won Group B at 2-1-0, scoring 3, allowing 1.
That came from a 2-1 win over Zimbabwe, 1-0 win over South Africa and 0-0 draw with Angola.
The Round of 16 was again close for much of the game until Egypt opened the scoring in the 69′. It stayed 1-0 until Benin tied it in the 83′ and sent the game to extra-time. With goals in each half of extra-time, Egypt eventually won 3-1.
The Quarterfinals vs Ivory Coast were interesting. For a team that rarely scores multiple goals (in regulation), Egypt went up 2-0 a half hour into the game before an own goal cut the lead to 2-1. Salah put them up 3-1 in the second half before Ivory Coast got a second in the 73′, and Egypt hung on to win 3-2. Both teams had 4 shots on target.
Egypt has some injury concerns from the knockout rounds with Hamdy and Hegazi both likely out.
In Egypt’s last 27 games in all comps, they have only 2 losses. Only 4 times in 43 games have they not scored. But, they’ve only scored multiple goals 3 times in 12 games in regulation. They’ve also only kept 2 clean sheets in their past 11.
Senegal vs Egypt Head-to-Head
This match up historically close with Egypt being 7-2-6. The last meetings were in 2022, a 1-0 win for both and a 0-0 draw. The Under 2.5 is 5-0 and 14-1 all-time. Even the Under 1.5 is 12-3.
The most memorable meeting was the 2021 AFCON Final where Senegal won in PKs.
AFCON Prediction
Both teams rarely lose going much further back than just AFCON and historically there is so little between them. Senegal has probably looked just a bit better as even when Egypt wins, they’re a bit shaky and their defense got exposed last game. Their wins have come late, with PKs and even with ET.
I’m not against a draw (+190) or a SGP with Senegal double chance, Senegal to score and Mane 1+ shot on target (-125) or Senegal double chance, to score and under 3.5 (-120).
- AFCON Picks: Draw (+190) or a SGP with Senegal double chance, Senegal to score and under 3.5 (-120).
