River Plate vs Monterrey Head-to-Head

River Plate in undefeated in 2 all-time matches between the teams with a 1-0 win in 2010 and a 1-1 draw in 2017, both at the Intercontinental Champions Cup.

River Plate Preview

River Plate saw goals in the in the 12′, 48′ and 73′ minutes from Facundo Colidio, Sebastian Driussi and Maximiliano Meza and went on to beat Urawa Red Diamonds 3-1 on Matchday 1 only conceding a second half penalty. They led in possession at 59% and shots 13-9, but Urawa had more shots on target at 6-5. It wasn’t all positive though as Driussi suffered an ankle injury and could be replaced by Miguel Borja. Midfielder Enzo Perez also went off at half.

River Plate are technically in the off-season before the Clausura kicks offs next month.

Last season in the Apertura they were 2nd in Group B at 8-7-1, scoring 21 goals and allowing 9. That put them 4 points back of first place Rosario Central. They reached the quarterfinals, drew Platense 1-1 and went on the lose in PKs. That was their first loss in 14 games and only their second loss in all year in 24 games. Considering they lost in PKs, they’re currently undefeated in regulation since March 1, a run of 17 games after winning at the CWC.

In the Libertadores, they topped Group B at 3-3-0 scoring 13 and allowing 7 in those 6 games setting up a trip to the Round of 16.

River only has 1 clean sheet in 9 games now, but have scored 3, 1, 1, 6, 3, 3, 4, 2, 2 and 3 in those games. Naturally, the BTTS has been a good bet at 8-1.

In league play, Miguel Borja led the way with 5 goals, followed by Facundo Colidio with 4.

Monterrey Preview

Monterrey got on the scoresheet early vs Inter with Sergio Ramos scoring in the 25′ minutes, but Lautaro Martinez levelled soon after in the 42′. There were very few scoring chances with Inter leading in shots on target by just a 2-1 margin, despite holding 62% possession.

Monterrey is technically in the offseason awaiting the start of the Apertura in Mexico. Their last game before the CWC was May 10, a 2-1 loss to eventual champions Toluca in the quarterfinals.

Los Rayados were 7th in the Apertura at 8-4-5 scoring 32 and allowing 23.

Other tournament play saw them exit to Vancouver in the CONCACAF Champions Cup in the Round of 16.

Their form down the stretch was spotty at 6-1-5 in their last 12 games. Scoring hasn’t been an issue having scored in 12 straight games and 13 after scoring vs Inter Milan.

In Sergio Canales and German Berterame, they have 2 players who accounted for most of their goals as they had 14G/8A and 13G respectively.

With no silverware to show of late, Martin Demichelis was shown the door and Domenec Torrent entered as the next head coach before the tournament and got off to a solid start drawing the UCL finalists.

River Plate vs Monterrey Prediction

No team from South America has lost a game yet in this tournament, but Monterrey were equally impressive drawing Inter and I can see either the BTTS (-130) or the draw (+250) as options. A BTTS + the Draw would be a big payday at +325.
