Ivory Coast vs Burkina Faso Preview
Ivory Coast (Les Elephants)
42nd in FIFA Rankings.
A 1-0 win on Matchday 1 got the champs off on the right foot with Amad Diallo scoring in the 49′ against Mozambique. They had 56% possession, and led in shots 15-3 and shots on target 5-2.
It was another close one on MD2. Diallo opened the scoring again to give Ivory Coast a 1-0 lead, but they conceded minutes later to go on to draw Cameroon 1-1. Ivory Coast had 51% possession, and led in shots 12-11, and shots on target just 2-1.
Versus an already eliminated Gabon team on MD3, it looked like an easy win, however, they made 10 changes to the lineup. But it was Gabon who scored twice within 21 minutes to lead 2-0. But, Ivory Coast stormed back with goals in the 44′, 84′ and 91′ minutes to steal a 3-2 win. Those 2 Gabon goals, proved to be their only 2 shots on target.
In their last 10 games they have only lost a friendly to Saudi Arabia 1-0. In competitive matches, they’ve not lost in 14, going back to September 2024. Oddly, win, lose, or draw, it’s rare that both teams score outside of their past 2 games. The BTTS No is 14-2. The Under 2.5 is 10-3. Much of that is to do with the fact they’ve conceded just 3 goals in 10 games and 4 in 14.
With only 7 shots on target allowed through the Group Stage, only 4 teams have allowed fewer.
Burkina Faso (Les Etalons / The Stallions)
62nd in FIFA Rankings.
On Matchday 1 they met Equatorial Guinea and despite going up a man, they conceded first and needed 2 stoppage time goals to fight back and get a 2-1 win.
MD2, saw them keep it close vs Algeria, only conceding a PK in the 23′, while having slightly more possession and shot attempts, but came up short losing 1-0 to Algeria.
On MD3, goals from Traore in the 16′ and Kouassi in the 85′ paced them to a 2-0 win over Sudan. They didn’t put up many shots though as Sudan outshot them 10-9, though Burkina Faso led in shots on target 3-2. They also lost starting keeper Herve Koffi to a thigh injury, as well as Cyriaque Irie. Meanwhile, Azi Ki has left the team after the death of this nephew.
They’ve now won 6/7 and are 7-1-1 in their last 9 overall games and have scored in 9/12.
Ivory Coast vs Burkina Faso Head-to-Head
Ivory Coast leads the all-time head-to-heads at 9-8-3. However, Burkina Faso has won 2 of the past 3 matchups. Each team had a 2-0 win in the 2024 Africa Nations Championship. Under 2.5 has gone 6-2, while Under 3.5 has gone 8-0.
AFCON Prediction
With no losses in 14, it’s hard to bet against the champs. They’re winning and rarely conceding. But then Burkina Faso has been solid too and has found some success vs this opponent in recently.
- AFCON Picks: Ivory Coast double chance & under 2.5 (-120)
