Egypt Preview
Eqypt were 1st in Group C at 2-1-0 ahead of Spain, Dominican Republic and Uzbekistan.
They kicked off the Olympics with a 0-0 draw versus the Dominican Republic, then beat Uzbekistan 1-0 and Spain 2-1.
In the quarters they drew Paraguay 1-1 before going on to win in PKs. But needed a late equalizer in the 88’ to get there.
In the semifinals, they struck first versus the hosts France with Mahmoud Saber scoring in the 62’.
Jean-Phillipe Mateta levelled in the 83’ for France to make it 1-1.
France almost was awarded a PK with what looked like an obvious handball by Egypt but the referee after conferring with VAR decided a foul occurred first and didn’t award it.
Unfortunately, Omar Fayed took a yellow after arguing about the decision to look at VAR in the first place and then immediately once ET started he was a called on a yellow card challenge meaning he was sent off.
France would ice it with another from Matete in the 99’ and a third in the 108’ from Michael Olise.
The Egypt U23s play in a variety of competitions including many friendlies, the WAFF Championship and U23 Africa Cup of Nations.
Go back to October 2022 and they’re 15-6-4 and all 4 of those losses went ET or PKs. So they’ve not lost in regulation since a 1-0 loss to the Brazil U23s in the 2021 Olympics on July 31, 2021.
Morocco Preview
Morocco topped Group B at 2-0-1 ahead of Argentina, Ukraine and Iraq.
Their results were 2-1 over Argentina, a 2-1 loss to Ukraine and a 3-0 win over Iraq.
In the quarterfinals they routed USA 4-0.
Then in the semis they got on the scoresheet first against the favored Spain with a PK goal in the 37’.
But Fermin Lopez stayed hot for Spain, scoring in the 65’ and then assiting to Juanlu Sanchez in the 85’ and Morocco came out on the losing end of a 2-1 result.
Go back further and this U23 side is 11-0-5, but 2 of those wins went to ET or PKs.
Egypt vs Morocco Head-to-Head
The U23 versions of these teams have met 3 times, but two were back in 2014.
More recently, they met last summer in the U23 Africa Cup of Nations where Morocco won 2-1 in extra-time.
The senior teams last met in the 2022 AFCON won 2-1 by Egypt in extra-time. So head-to-head I’d say there is little to go off of.
Egypt vs Morocco Prediction
If you want player props you have to look at Morocco’s Soufiane Rahimi who leads all players with 6 goals or Egypt’s Ibrahim Adel who has 3 goals, tied for 4th.
But for the game, I’d lean towards a Morocco win but would rather pick a tight game where the Under or Draw comes into play as both battle for their first Olympic soccer medal in their nation’s history.
