Egypt vs Ivory Coast Preview
Egypt (The Pharaohs)
34th in FIFA Rankings and AFCON’s winningest team with 7 titles.
On Matchday 1 they were put to the brink, down 1-0 to Zimbabwe until they levelled in the 64′ and then scored the winner in the 91′.
Then on Matchday 2 they took the lead with a Salah PK, but then took a red (Mohamed Hany) right after and had to play the whole second half down a man, but still came out with a 1-0 win over South Africa.
Versus Angola on MD3, there was little between the teams and Angola actually had the edge in shots 15-4 and shots on target 5-2, but no one could score and it ended 0-0.
The Round of 16 was again close for much of the game until Egypt opened the scoring in the 69′. It stayed 1-0 until Benin tied it in the 83′ and sent the game to extra-time. With goals in each half of extra-time, Egypt eventually won 3-1.
Prior to AFCON, they weren’t good in the Arab Cup with a 1-1 draw, 1-1 draw and 3-0 loss, not advancing out of the groups.
But in their last 26 games in all comps, they have only 2 losses. Only 4 times in 42 games have they not scored. But, they’ve only scored multiple goals twice in 11 games (not counting last game where they need ET).
Ivory Coast (Les Elephants)
42nd in FIFA Rankings.
A 1-0 win on Matchday 1 got the champs off on the right foot with Amad Diallo scoring in the 49′ against Mozambique.
It was another close one on MD2. Diallo opened the scoring again to give Ivory Coast a 1-0 lead, but they conceded minutes later to go on to draw Cameroon 1-1. Ivory Coast led in shots 12-11, and shots on target just 2-1.
Versus an already eliminated Gabon team on MD3, it looked like an easy win, however, they made 10 changes to the lineup. But it was Gabon who scored twice within 21 minutes to lead 2-0. But, Ivory Coast stormed back with goals in the 44′, 84′ and 91′ minutes to steal a 3-2 win. Those 2 Gabon goals, proved to be their only 2 shots on target.
In their last 10 games they have only lost a friendly to Saudi Arabia 1-0. In competitive matches, they’ve not lost in 14, going back to September 2024. Oddly, win, lose, or draw, it’s rare that both teams score outside of their past 2 games. The BTTS No is 14-2. The Under 2.5 is 10-3. Much of that is to do with the fact they’ve conceded just 3 goals in 10 games and 4 in 14.
Next up they met Burkina Faso in the Round of 16 and it was more straightforward scoring in the 20′, 32′ and 87′ for a 3-0 win.
With only 9 shots on target allowed, only Morocco and Nigeria have allowed fewer. Amad Diallo has a chance at the Golden Boot with 3 goals, 15 shots and 4 on target.
Egypt vs Ivory Coast Head-to-Head
Egypt is 12-3-7 overall in the matchup but they’ve barely played recently. Since 2013, they’ve played once, in 2022, in the AFCON Round of 16 which ended 0-0 and Egypt winning in PKs.
AFCON Prediction
Despite only allowing 2 goals, Egypt has actually given up a fair amount of shot with 50 attempts and 16 on target (only 6 teams have given up more on target). Ivory Coast have also only conceded twice.
Both teams rarely lose, but for Egypt they rarely blow anyone away. If not a draw (+175), then I like this SGP option: Ivory Coast double chance / under 3.5 / Diallo 1+ shot on target (+160).
- AFCON Picks: Draw (+175)
