Cameroon vs Morocco Preview
Cameroon (The Indomitable Lions)
57th in FIFA Rankings.
Cameroon were 2nd in Group F, undefeated at 2-1-0, scoring 4, conceding 2.
On Matchday 1, Etta Eyong’s 6′ minute goal stood up as the only goal in a 1-0 win over Gabon.
On MD2 vs Ivory Coast they conceded in the 51′ but tied it in the 56′ from an own goal and went on to draw 1-1. The shots were minimal with Cameroon having 1 on target and Ivory Coast only 2.
Next up was Mozambique. The Mambas scored first in the 23′, but Cameroon stormed back with goals in the 28′ (own goal) and the winner in the 55′ (Kofane) for a 2-1 win.
It was another 2-1 win in the Round of 16. Up 2-0 after 47 minutes, it looked straightforward, but South Africa got one late in the 88′ to make it interesting. It was another Cameroon game with minimal shots, as they had 3 on target and South Africa 2. Cameroon has only given up 10 shots on target through 4 games. They did lose defender Yongwa to injury last game.
They’ve now only lost 2/21, Under 2.5 is 7-3 and BTTS usually doesn’t hit with the ‘No’ going 6-3 and 8-5. But, it’s now hit in 3/4 AFCON games and each of their last 3.
Morocco (Atlas Lions)
11th in FIFA Rankings.
Morocco won Group A at 2-1-0, scoring 6 and conceding just 1.
They opened AFCON with a 2-0 win over Comoros, though it was 0-0 until Diaz and El Kaabi scored in the 55′ and 74′ minutes.
On MD2, they drew Mali 1-1, with both goals coming from PKs, first Diaz for Morocco in first-half stoppage time, then Sinayoko for Mali in the 64′.
They finished the Group Stage with a straightforward win over Zambia winning 3-0. El Kaabi and Diaz scored in the first half and El Kaabi added a second in the second half.
In the Round of 16 they had 73% possession and led in shot attempt 12-4, while holding Tanzania to just 1 shot on target. They could only put 3 on frame themselves and only a 64′ minute goal from Diaz ended up finding the back of the net.
Morocco have only allowed 18 shot attempts and 4 on target in the tournament, both best overall. Diaz leads the Golden Boot race with 4 goals, to go wth 14 shots and 7 on target.
Morocco are now undefeated in 21 overall matches, with just 4 of those games ended drawn in regulation. In 20/21 and 33/35 games they’ve scored. They’ve also kept clean sheets in 13/16.
Cameroon vs Morocco Head-to-Head
Morocco is 7-4-2 all-time, but Cameroon has won the last two meetings, 4-0 and 2-0, but they were in 2021 and 2018.
AFCON Prediction
This looks very hard to split with both teams being incredibly solid defensively. Though, playing Comoros, Zambia, Mali and Tanzania, are not the most offensive teams for Morocco.
The BTTS is 3-1 in Cameroon’s AFCON games, but there’s not been over 3 goals in any of their last 11 games. I can definitely see a draw here at 0-0 or 1-1. But the home field gives Morocco an edge.
- AFCON Picks: Morocco double chance / under 3.5 / Diaz 1+ shot on target (-110)
