Nigeria vs Morocco Preview
Nigeria (Super Eagles)
38th in FIFA Rankings. They won Group C at 3-0-0, scoring 8, allowing 4.
First it was a 2-1 win over Tanzania, then a 3-2 win over Tunisia and a 3-1 win over Uganda.
In one of the most lopsided matches of the tournament, the Super Eagles ran rampant over Mozambique in the Round of 16 scoring twice within 25 minutes and going on to win 4-0. Lookman and Adams scored 1 each, and Osimhem a brace. They had 62% possession and led in shots 21-2 an shots on target 9-0.
Versus another undefeated team in Algeria in the Quarterfinals, it was again Super Eagles. In truth Algeria were never really in it and posed no threat all game. Nigeria held Algeria to just 2 shot attempts and 0 on target. Osimhen and Adams scored in the 2nd half and Nigeria won 2-0. They will be without midfueld captain Ndidi who is suspended form yellow card bookings which could hurt them defensively.
They’ve now scored in 14 straight and in 21/22. BTTS bets are 6-2 and 8-3 as they’ve also conceded in 8/11. If they score 2+ goals again in the semis, they’ll be the first team in AFCON history to score 2+ in 6 straight games.
They’re ranked 2nd in both shots on target for and against, giving up just 6 shots on their net.
Osimhen is 2nd in scoring with 4 goals, while Lookman has 3. Lookman also has 11 goal contributions in his last 11 AFCON games across the last two tournaments.
Morocco (Atlas Lions)
11th in FIFA Rankings. Won Group A at 2-1-0, scoring 6, allowing 1.
That included beating Comoros 2-0, drawing Mali 1-1 and beating Zambia 3-0.
In the Round of 16 they had 73% possession and led in shot attempt 12-4, while holding Tanzania to just 1 shot on target. They could only put 3 on frame themselves and only a 64′ minute goal from Diaz ended up finding the back of the net.
Versus Cameroon in the Quarters, it was Diaz again scoring in the 26′ and Saibari in the 74′ to pace Morocco to a 2-0 win. The shots were minimal, with Morocco having only 2 on target and Cameroon 0.
Morocco have only allowed 23 shot attempts and 4 on target in the tournament, both best overall. Diaz leads the Golden Boot race with 5 goals, to go wth 15 shots and 8 on target.
Morocco are now undefeated in 22 overall matches, with just 4 of those games ended drawn in regulation. In 21/22 and 34/36 games they’ve scored. They’ve also kept clean sheets in 14/17.
Nigeria vs Morocco Head-to-Head
Nigeria holds the all-time advantage at 6-1-4. They’ve not met since 2018, a 4-0 Morocco win in the Nations Championship.
AFCON Prediction
We have the tournament’s highest scorers vs the hosts who have the current scoring leader and who have allowed the fewest goals (1) and 0 from open play. I can see a draw (+200) or the BTTS (-110) as solid options. To improve a BTTS bet, you could add Osimhen and Diaz to each have 1+ shot on target (+240).
- AFCON Picks: Draw (+200) or the BTTS (-110)
