Urawa Red Diamonds vs Monterrey Head-to-Head
This is the first meeting between the teams.
Urawa Red Diamonds Preview
Japan’s Urawa went down early to River Plate conceding in the 12′ minute before also falling behind 2-0 and then cutting the lead to 2-1 with a 58′ minute penalty from Yusuke Matsup. River added a third in the 73′ to seal a 3-1 win. River Plate had 59% possession and led in shots 13-9, but Urawa actually had more shots on target at 6-5.
Next up was Inter Milan. Urawa scored early in the 11′ from Ryoma Watanabe and almost held on for the unlikely win but conceded in the 78′ and 92′ minutes to lose 2-1. They were heavily outplayed with only 18% possession and being outshot 26-5, but frustrated Inter only giving up 4 shots on target.
This is one of Japan’s top sides having won three AFC Champions League titles, while also claiming a joint-record eight Emperor’s Cups.
The Reds find themselves 4th in the Japan J1 League at 9-7-5, scoring 26 and allowing 20. With 34 points, they’re only 3 back of 2nd, but 7 back of 1st-placed Kashima Antlers. Ryoma Watanabe leads the Reds with 6G/1A in league play.
Recently, Urawa’s form has taken a dip tough. While they won their last game 2-1 in the league, that’s just their 2nd win in 7 games and their only win in their last 4.
And while they have been more of an Under team, in all matches recently the BTTS is on a 7-1 run and the BTTS & Over 2.5 is 6-1 after their loss to Inter Milan. It’s now also just 1 win in 6 overall matches and only 2 in 9.

Monterrey Preview
Monterrey got on the scoresheet early vs Inter in Game 1 with Sergio Ramos scoring in the 25′ minutes, but Lautaro Martinez levelled soon after in the 42′. There were very few scoring chances with Inter leading in shots on target by just a 2-1 margin, despite holding 62% possession.
Monterrey held 60% possession in Game 2 versus River Plate and on another day may have lost has they gave up 18 shot attempts and 6 on target while only have 3/2 of their own, but River failed to convert and the game ended 0-0. Los Rayados will lose midfielder Jorge Rodriguez to suspension for this game.
Monterrey is technically in the offseason awaiting the start of the Apertura in Mexico. Their last game before the CWC was May 10, a 2-1 loss to eventual champions Toluca in the quarterfinals.
Los Rayados were 7th in the Apertura at 8-4-5 scoring 32 and allowing 23.
Other tournament play saw them exit to Vancouver in the CONCACAF Champions Cup in the Round of 16.
Their form down the stretch was spotty at 6-1-5 in their last 12 games. Scoring hasn’t been an issue having scored in 12 straight games and 13 after scoring vs Inter Milan.
In Sergio Canales and German Berterame, they have 2 players who accounted for most of their goals as they had 14G/8A and 13G respectively.
With no silverware to show of late, Martin Demichelis was shown the door and Domenec Torrent entered as the next head coach before the tournament and got off to a solid start drawing the UCL finalists.

Urawa Red Diamonds vs Monterrey Prediction
Monterrey will be hoping for a win and also for someone to emerge victorious between River and Inter, so they can jump one of them into the top 2. Monterrey have 2 points while those two each of 4. All three could also tie on 5 points if River and Inter draw and Monterrey wins which creates havoc in splitting the tie-breakers. Urawa just hung around with Inter so why can’t they against Monterrey? But, the impetus to sit back and defend may not be there knowing they’re already knocked out. Monterrey need the win and they need to score goals to help in any sorta potential tiebreaker and they only have one 1 and 0 wins. Let’s back them to score 2+ goals.
