Mamelodi Sundowns vs Borussia Dortmund Head-to-Head

This is the first-ever meeting between the teams.

Mamelodi Sundowns Preview

The Sundowns met South Korea’s Ulsan Hyundai in their first match and after a long weather delay broke up the game, Iqraam Rayners scored in the 36′ minute to get them the game’s only goal. Mamelodi had 68% possession, and led in shots 14-9, but Ulsan led in shots on target 3-2.

In South Africa’s Betway Premiership, Mamelodi Sundowns finished 1st, a whole 12 points clear of 2nd place, at 24-1-3, scoring 65 and allowing just 13 goals. That’s their 15th league title and they’ve now won it 8 years running. They also reached the CAF Champions League Final but came up short.

The CWC is a big deal for some of the smaller teams. Winning the CAF Champions League only brings in a prize of less than $5 million. Meanwhile, the $9.5 million qualification prize for the CWC and $2 million for a win, already blows that prize money out of the water.

The majority of their scoring comes from two players, Lucas Ribeiro (17G/9A) and Igraam Rayners (14G/9A). They have 20 and 22 goals across all matches respectively.

Mamelodi had been off for some time finishing their season on May 18. They finished with a streak of 6 straight wins where they won 3-0, 2-0, 3-0, 3-0, 3-0 and 2-0. It’s also just 1 loss in any match over 14 games now. And after beating Ulsan, they’ve kept 7 straight wins and clean sheets.

Borussia Dortmund Preview

Despite being favored to win against Brazil’s Fluminense, Dortmund struggled and ended drawn 0-0. They had 55% possession but where outshot 14-7 in attempts and 5-3 in shots on target. While Nico Schlotterbeck and Emra Can missed out, Jobe Bellingham made his debut.

Dortmund started slow in the German Bundesliga and languished mid-table for some time but were scorching hot down the stretch and in the final days reached 4th overall at 17-6-11, scoring 71 goals, allowing 51 and finishing with 57 points. That was 3 back of 3rd and just 2 above 5th. That claimed them the final Champions League spot.

Serhou Guirassy had a stellar season scoring 21 goals to go with 5 assists, putting him second in the scoring race, 5 behind Harry Kane. He was held silent vs Fluminense with 0 shot attempts.

After getting knocked out of the UCL Quarterfinal to Barcelona, Dortmund drew Bayern Munich 2-2 and then won out the rest of the way with 6 wins, outscoring opponents 20-7. So while they didn’t keep many clean sheets in that time and conceded a goal in 12 of their final 14 games, they also scored 3 or 4 goals in each of those final 6.

They’re now undefeated in 8 at 6-2-0.

Mamelodi Sundowns vs Borussia Dortmund Prediction

Dortmund was not good on Matchday Day 1 and I don’t feel great about their chances of going deep and they only put up 0.24 of xG vs Fluminense, but you still have to expect them to get the win here in a game where they’ll need points. Adding Mamelodi to score could be an option to bring up the price.
